This is a Must Read I was just informed by Past Department Commander and Post 8787 in Austin Commander, Duane Shriver that the IRS has requested from the Post a list of all community activities and other patriotic events that the Post has hosted for the past two years along with how much money was spent on these projects. Now the easiest way to satisfy this request is to produce copies of your Community Service, Americanism and Youth Project reports that are sent to Department. Additionally, if you keep do a Community Service Book each year and keep it (Not using it year to year to satisfy a requirement for all state), this would satisfy what the IRS wants. Unfortunately, Post 8787 did neither. Department only keeps the number of projects and types. We do not keep a copy of each report so we cannot help. This is the second Post this year in the Austin area that has been asked to produce those records. We have been margining Posts about this for a couple of years now. Please make sure your Posts know this is happening and be prepared for it. Roy J. Grona Roy, along these same lines ----I have been informed in discussions with various members up here in North Texas and East Texas that at least 3 posts have been hit with IRS audits wherein they were cited for not dealing with tips by bartenders and 1099s for "contract labor" and entertainment. Some have been tagged with substantial penalties up to 5 figures. I am going to clean up my own house in these regards |
